How to get surgery quotes abroad that are actually accurate

THE ESTIMATE · 2026-08-22 · 8 MIN READ · TYPICAL 2026 RANGES, NOT QUOTES
A desk with a blank spreadsheet open on a laptop beside a stack of medical bill estimates — where quote normalization happens

The quality of the quotes you get back is a direct function of the request you send out. Email a clinic "how much is a knee replacement?" and you'll get a range as vague as your question. Send a complete case file and you'll get numbers a clinic is actually willing to stand behind. Here's the process that produces real quotes — the same one we use when routing cases through our network.

Step 1: Assemble your case file before contacting anyone

One folder, ready to attach:

Step 2: Send a request that forces a comparable answer

Ask every clinic for the same thing, in the same words. A request that works:

Template: "I'm seeking an itemized quote for [procedure], diagnosed as [diagnosis]. Files attached: [list]. Please itemize surgeon's fee, facility, anesthesia, implant brand/model, included hospital nights, pre-op testing, medications, follow-up schedule, and your complication policy, plus how many days I should remain in the country post-op. Please confirm which surgeon would perform the procedure and their registry number."

That last clause matters in Colombia specifically: every licensed physician appears in ReTHUS, the national public registry, so a surgeon's registration is checkable in minutes. A clinic comfortable with informed patients will volunteer it. The full vetting workflow — registry checks, hospital-level JCI accreditation, facility verification — is covered at SafeMedicalTravel.co.

Step 3: Normalize the responses

Quotes will come back in different shapes. Put them in one spreadsheet with a column per line item from our quote checklist, and convert every "not mentioned" into a question, not an assumption. The two traps to catch:

Step 4: Price the whole trip, not the surgery

Add to each Colombian quote: round-trip flights (Medellín and Bogotá are both short direct hops from Miami and other US gateways), recovery lodging for the recommended stay, ground transport, and a 10–15% contingency. Compare that total against the true US cash price for the same specification — found via the methods in our uninsured playbook. For major procedures, the typical 2026 gap shown in our eight-procedure comparison survives the travel math with room to spare; for minor ones it may not, and a comparison done honestly will tell you so.

Step 5: Validate before you commit

Before any deposit: verify the surgeon in ReTHUS, confirm the operating facility by name and check its accreditation, get the final quote and complication policy in writing, and have a video consultation with the actual surgeon — not only a patient coordinator. Payment terms that demand large non-refundable deposits before a surgeon has reviewed your file are a walk-away signal.

Or: skip to step 5

Steps 1–4 are exactly what we do for patients through ColombiaMedical.co — case file forwarded, itemization demanded, responses normalized — run from Medellín by people who visit these clinics in person. Procedure-specific questions go deeper on our specialty sites, from cosmetic surgery to dental to fertility. Send us the procedure you're pricing and we'll start the file.
