What a real surgery quote should include
Two clinics quote you the same procedure. One says $6,400, the other says $7,900. Which is cheaper? You genuinely cannot know yet — because a surgery "price" is only meaningful once you know what's inside it. The $6,400 quote that excludes anesthesia, hospital nights, and the surgical hardware is more expensive than the $7,900 quote that bundles everything. This is the single most common way patients get burned, at home and abroad.
The anatomy of a complete quote
A quote worth comparing itemizes, at minimum, all of the following — each either priced or explicitly marked as included:
| Line item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Surgeon's fee | The operating surgeon by name — and that they, not a junior associate, perform the procedure |
| Facility / OR fee | Which facility, and its accreditation status |
| Anesthesia | Included, and administered by an anesthesiologist (not only priced separately after the fact) |
| Implants & hardware | Brand, model, and class — a knee quote without the implant specified is not a knee quote |
| Hospital nights | How many are bundled, and the per-night rate if you need more |
| Pre-op testing | Labs, imaging, cardiology clearance — included, excluded, or done at home |
| Medications | In-hospital meds vs. discharge prescriptions |
| Follow-up | How many post-op visits, over what period, and what tele-follow-up looks like after you fly home |
| Complication policy | What happens, and who pays, if a revision or readmission is needed |
Red flags in any quote, any country
- A single round number with no line items. "$5,000 all included" with no breakdown means nobody has committed to anything.
- Quotes issued without reviewing your case. Real pricing follows evaluation — imaging, labs, history. A price given before anyone has looked at your file is a marketing number. (This cuts both ways: it's also why every figure on this site is labeled a typical range, not a quote.)
- Unspecified hardware. Implant brand and model belong on the paper. "Imported implant" is not a specification.
- Anesthesia listed as "arranged separately." Classic vehicle for a surprise four-figure add-on.
- Pressure pricing. "This price is only valid if you book this week" is a sales tactic, not a clinical schedule.
Comparing a US quote to a Colombian one
Build both quotes to the same specification, then compare all-in totals. On the US side, that means the true cash price — see our uninsured pricing playbook — not the chargemaster bill. On the Colombian side, add flights, recovery lodging for the clinically appropriate stay, and a contingency buffer to the clinic's bundle. Then check the vetting boxes that have nothing to do with price: hospital-level JCI accreditation where applicable, and the surgeon's registration in ReTHUS, Colombia's public national credential registry — our sister site SafeMedicalTravel.co walks through both.
When Colombian quotes are built properly, the comparison usually still favors Colombia on major procedures — the typical 2026 ranges in our eight-procedure comparison already reflect bundled pricing. The point of this checklist isn't to make Colombia look better or worse. It's to make both columns tell the truth.
Getting quotes built this way
You can chase itemized quotes clinic by clinic yourself — here's how to do it well — or let us route your case.
